Dr Hannah Budge

Social research scientist

I am a social research scientist at the James Hutton Institute, with a background in agriculture, having grown up on my family’s farm in the Shetland Islands. I joined the James Hutton Institute in April 2025, previously I was a Postdoctoral Scholar at The Ohio State University in the USA, where I worked on a project examining childcare and child safety on farms. This linked to my PhD work, which focused on gender equality in the agricultural industry in the Scottish Islands and two Atlantic Canadian Islands. I have experience using qualitative methods, primarily interviews and focus groups.

My work as part of EPIC includes understanding farmer’s experiences and perceptions surrounding Bluetongue Virus, including the impacts of restrictions zones.
