Dr Dave Bartley
Parasitologist
I am a Principal Investigator in the Disease Control Division of Moredun Research Institute and have specialised in veterinary parasitology for nearly 30 years. My current interests are in improving diagnostics and control strategies for nematode infections of ruminants.
I graduated from the University of East London in 1995 with a BSc (Hons) Infectious Diseases and began work at Moredun later that year. In 2008 I was awarded my PhD from Edinburgh University for work on the ‘Prevalence, characterisation and management of anthelmintic resistance in gastro-intestinal nematodes of Scottish sheep’.
Role and scientific interests: I have a keen interest in anthelmintic resistance research, particularly in areas around improving diagnostics and control strategies for nematode infections of ruminants.
I have projects looking at:
• Transmission risks of wildlife in the dissemination of nematodes species
• The development and generation of resources for cattle producers around roundworm control and biosecurity
• Development of tools and resources to improve knowledge exchange between the various stakeholders involved in controlling ruminant nematodes
• Mitigation of Greenhouse gas emissions from livestock through parasite management
I actively participate in the promotion of best practice roundworm control in ruminants and the work has been used to inform and update government and levy board publications on the best practice advice for producers (e.g. Sustainable Control of Parasites of Sheep; SCOPS and Control of Worms Sustainably; COWS).
Current and planned EPIC work: Within EPIC I will be looking at the development and dissemination of anthelmintic resistance in economically important roundworm species and the role that animal movement may play in their spread.
Hobbies and interests: Travelling, photography and cani-crossing
